Why “7X,” “5X,” and “triple strength” aren’t measuring what matters
Walk through any magnesium category online and you’ll find products leading with a multiplier and a big number — “5X Strength,” “7X Magnesium,” “2000mg per serving” — combining anywhere from three to eight different magnesium salts (oxide, citrate, glycinate, malate, taurate, threonate, orotate, aspartate) in one capsule or tablet. That “2000mg” figure is almost always the total weight of the magnesium compound blend — the salt plus its carrier molecule — not the elemental magnesium your body actually uses. Different magnesium salts have very different elemental yields: magnesium oxide is roughly 60% elemental by weight, while magnesium glycinate and citrate are closer to 14–16%. A headline “2000mg, 7 forms” claim can, once the math is actually done, deliver meaningfully less usable elemental magnesium than a single, clearly stated 300mg-elemental product — while sounding several times larger on the label.

Marketing for these blends commonly claims each salt serves a distinct purpose — glycinate for sleep, taurate for heart health, threonate for brain function, malate for energy. Some of this has real, if preliminary, research behind specific salts; a fair amount of the site-specific messaging, particularly the strongest claims made for threonate and taurate, rests on limited early studies rather than robust, repeated human trials proving one salt form meaningfully outperforms another once magnesium itself is adequately dosed and well-absorbed. Once elemental magnesium is absorbed into the bloodstream, it functions the same way regardless of which salt delivered it — magnesium doesn’t carry a separate “sleep version” and “heart version” once it’s actually in your system.
This is also where ZMA-style formulas sit in a slightly different category worth naming specifically: ZMA (zinc, magnesium, and B6) is an older, simpler, well-known combination — but the magnesium in a traditional ZMA formula is almost always magnesium aspartate, one of the less efficiently absorbed common chelated forms, closer in practical terms to citrate than to glycinate.
