What zinc actually does for you, day to day
Zinc’s job is easy to overlook because it works quietly across a lot of different systems at once, rather than doing one obvious thing. It’s central to how wounds actually close and heal, how skin repairs and renews itself, and how hair follicles stay healthy. Underneath all of that, zinc is a required helper molecule for more than 300 different enzymatic reactions in the body — but the number that actually matters day to day isn’t the count of reactions, it’s what happens when zinc runs short: you get sick more, you heal slower, and things that should bounce back quickly don’t.
One detail that makes zinc genuinely different from a mineral like iron: your body has no dedicated place to store it. Iron gets banked in reserves you can draw on for a while during a low-intake period. Zinc doesn’t work that way — status depends on what you’re taking in consistently, day after day, which is exactly why a gap here tends to creep up quietly rather than showing up as one dramatic event.

Getting this wrong means potentially missing the actual cause.
Why this shows up so often in India specifically
There’s a very concrete, food-science reason zinc deficiency is more common in India than the “eat more zinc-rich food” advice usually accounts for. India’s diet is predominantly cereal and legume based — wheat, rice, lentils, chickpeas — which is nutritious in many ways but happens to be naturally high in a compound called phytic acid (phytate). Phytate binds tightly to zinc in the gut and blocks a large share of it from ever being absorbed.
The practical impact is significant: diets with a high phytate-to-zinc ratio — the pattern typical of a cereal-and-legume-dominant diet with limited animal protein — show only about 10 to 15% zinc absorption. Compare that to a diet richer in animal protein, where absorption runs 30 to 50%. This means someone can be eating food that technically contains a reasonable amount of zinc and still be absorbing very little of it — which is exactly why this deficiency is so easy to miss even when a diet doesn’t look obviously restrictive.
