Best time to take
magnesium glycinate:
morning, night or with food?

For most people the best time to take magnesium glycinate is the evening, about 30 to 60 minutes before bed. That is the timing used in the 2025 sleep trial, and it is when the glycine in magnesium glycinate has been studied too. Here’s the simple science on morning vs night, with food or without, splitting the dose, and what to keep it apart from.

When is the best time to take magnesium glycinate? The short answer

At a Glance

Take magnesium glycinate in the evening, about 30 to 60 minutes before bed. This is the timing used in the 2025 sleep trial, and glycine has also been studied before bed. If you take more than one tablet, you can have one with dinner and the rest before bed. You can take it with or without food. Taking it every day matters more than the exact time.

Magnesium is not like a cup of coffee that works in twenty minutes. It builds up in your body over days and weeks. So the most important rule is simple: take it every day, at a time you will remember. For magnesium glycinate, there are good reasons to make that time the evening.

Why evening is the best time for magnesium glycinate

At a Glance

Two things point to the evening. In the 2025 trial of magnesium bisglycinate in adults with poor sleep, people took it 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. And magnesium glycinate carries glycine, a calming amino acid that was given before bed in the human sleep studies.

Reason one: the trial timing. In a 2025 study, 155 adults with poor sleep took magnesium bisglycinate (the same thing as magnesium glycinate) or a placebo for four weeks. They took it 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. The magnesium group improved their insomnia scores more than the placebo group.1

Reason two: the glycine. Magnesium glycinate is magnesium joined to glycine, an amino acid your brain uses as a calming signal. In human studies, 3 g of glycine taken before bed improved how well people felt they slept and how fresh they felt the next day.23 A full 440 mg serving of pure magnesium glycinate carries about 2.7 g of glycine, so an evening dose puts both helpers to work at the right time.

“Evening is when magnesium glycinate was tested, and when its glycine was tested. That makes the choice easy.”

The simple timing rule

Our guide to magnesium glycinate for sleep covers the trial in full.

Can you take magnesium glycinate in the morning?

At a Glance

Yes. Magnesium glycinate is not a sleeping pill and will not make you drowsy during the day. Your body’s magnesium level builds over weeks, so a morning dose still counts. Morning works well if it is the time you will remember, or as one part of a split dose.

Morning is fine. Magnesium supports normal muscles, nerves and energy all day long, and it does not knock you out. Many people take one tablet in the morning and the rest in the evening. If mornings are the only time you never forget, choose mornings.

With food or on an empty stomach?

At a Glance

Either works. Magnesium glycinate is gentle on the stomach, so most people can take it without food. Taking it with a meal or a light snack is a good choice if your stomach is sensitive, and in a study of magnesium-rich water, magnesium was absorbed a little better with a meal.

Magnesium glycinate is one of the gentlest forms, because the magnesium travels wrapped in glycine. Most people can take it with or without food. If your stomach is sensitive, take it with dinner or a small snack. In a study of magnesium-rich mineral water, magnesium was absorbed slightly better when taken with a meal.4

Always take it with a glass of water.

All at once, or split through the day?

At a Glance

Splitting helps. The gut absorbs a bigger share of magnesium from small amounts than from large ones. In one study, the same amount of magnesium was 51% absorbed when spread over the day and 32% when taken in two servings. So one tablet with dinner and the rest before bed is a smart routine.

Your gut takes in magnesium through a limited number of doorways. A small amount gets through easily; a big amount at once leaves more behind.

  • In a classic study, the share of magnesium absorbed fell from 65% at the smallest dose to 11% at the largest.5
  • In another, men drank the same magnesium-rich water as two big servings or seven small ones. Absorption was 32% with two servings and 51% with seven.6

You don’t need seven doses. Simply splitting your tablets between dinner and bedtime uses the same idea.

The best time, by what you want from it

For sleep and evening wind-down, take magnesium glycinate 30 to 60 minutes before bed. For night-time leg cramps, take it in the evening. For general daily magnesium, any regular time works, ideally split. For a sensitive stomach, take it with food.

What to keep magnesium apart from

At a Glance

Magnesium can bind to some medicines in the gut. Take certain antibiotics at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after magnesium, osteoporosis tablets (bisphosphonates) at least 2 hours apart, and thyroid tablets about 4 hours apart. An evening magnesium routine keeps it well away from morning medicines.

If you takeKeep magnesium
Tetracycline or quinolone antibioticsAntibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4–6 hours after, magnesium7
Osteoporosis tablets (bisphosphonates)At least 2 hours apart7
Thyroid tablets (levothyroxine)About 4 hours apart8
Iron tablets or high-dose zincAt a different time of day

A helpful side effect of evening magnesium: thyroid tablets and many other medicines are taken in the morning, so the gap takes care of itself. If you take any regular medicine, or have a kidney condition, check with your doctor before starting magnesium.

A simple daily routine

At a Glance

Take one tablet with dinner and the rest about an hour before bed, with water. Keep it away from the medicines listed above, take it every day, and give it four weeks. Morning is a good time for a multivitamin and omega-3, which leaves the evening for magnesium.

  1. Pick the eveningPlan your magnesium around dinner and bedtime.
  2. Split the tabletsTake one tablet with dinner and the rest 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
  3. Take it with waterAdd a small snack if your stomach is sensitive.
  4. Keep the gapsLeave the right number of hours between magnesium and antibiotics, osteoporosis tablets or thyroid tablets.
  5. Stay regular for four weeksTake it every day. The sleep trial measured its result after four weeks.

Fitting it into your day. Mornings suit a multivitamin, and omega-3 goes well with breakfast or lunch because it is an oil and sits comfortably with a meal. That leaves the evening free for magnesium, so nothing competes and nothing is forgotten.

About the studies
  • The 2025 trial gave 250 mg of magnesium a day as bisglycinate (two capsules, with about 1.5 g of glycine) for four weeks; the improvement was modest. It did not compare evening with morning dosing.1
  • The glycine studies gave 3 g of pure glycine before bed; they were small and funded by a glycine maker.23
  • The absorption studies used magnesium acetate with a meal and magnesium-rich mineral water, not magnesium glycinate tablets. They show how the gut handles magnesium in general.564
  • No trial has directly compared morning and evening magnesium glycinate. The evening advice rests on the timing used in the sleep and glycine studies.
  • The 4-hour gap for thyroid tablets comes from levothyroxine prescribing information, which lists magnesium-containing products among those to separate.8
Questions

Magnesium timing, answered plainly.

What is the best time to take magnesium glycinate?

The evening, about 30 to 60 minutes before bed. That is the timing used in the 2025 magnesium bisglycinate sleep trial, and glycine has also been studied before bed.

Should I take magnesium glycinate in the morning or at night?

Night suits most people, especially for sleep and evening calm. Morning is also fine, because magnesium builds up over weeks. Taking it every day matters more than the exact time.

Should I take magnesium glycinate with food?

You can take it with or without food. It is gentle on the stomach. If your stomach is sensitive, take it with dinner or a small snack.

Can I take magnesium glycinate on an empty stomach?

Yes, most people can. Magnesium glycinate is one of the gentlest forms. If you notice any discomfort, take it with food.

How long before bed should I take magnesium glycinate?

About 30 to 60 minutes before bed, as in the 2025 sleep trial.

Is it better to split magnesium into two doses?

Yes. The gut absorbs a bigger share of magnesium from smaller amounts. One tablet with dinner and the rest before bed is an easy way to split it.

Will magnesium glycinate make me sleepy during the day?

No. It is not a sleeping pill. It supports normal muscle and nerve function, and many people take part of their dose in the morning.

How long does magnesium glycinate take to work?

Give it about four weeks of daily use. The 2025 sleep trial measured its improvement after four weeks.

Can I take magnesium with my thyroid tablet or antibiotics?

Keep them apart. Take thyroid tablets about 4 hours away from magnesium, osteoporosis tablets at least 2 hours away, and tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after magnesium. Ask your doctor if unsure.

Can I take magnesium glycinate with a multivitamin or omega-3?

Yes. A simple plan is a multivitamin and omega-3 with a meal earlier in the day, and magnesium glycinate in the evening.

How do I take Pure Magnesium Glycinate by Evo Hominus™?

Three tablets a day: one with dinner and two about an hour before bed, with water. Women can take two tablets, which give about 293 mg of magnesium.
