The testosterone question — an honest look at the evidence
Boron’s testosterone reputation traces mostly to one small study: 8 healthy men given 10mg boron daily for one week showed increased free testosterone and decreased estradiol. It’s a real, published finding — but the tiny sample size and short duration mean it shouldn’t be treated as settled proof.
This is worth being genuinely direct about, because boron gets marketed heavily in men’s health circles on the strength of one specific study. In 2011, researchers gave 8 healthy male volunteers 10mg of boron daily for one week and found increased free testosterone, decreased estradiol, and reduced sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) — the protein that binds testosterone and makes it biologically unavailable. Less SHBG generally means more testosterone is actually free to be used by the body, which is a mechanistically plausible explanation for the finding.

Why sample size and duration matter hereThat said, an 8-person, one-week study is small and short by any clinical research standard. Separately, in postmenopausal women, boron supplementation has also been shown to raise estradiol and testosterone, though again in a fairly limited body of research compared to the calcium-retention evidence above.
Why boron isn’t officially “essential” — and why that’s fine
Boron has no established Recommended Dietary Allowance and no specific disease is known to result from deficiency, unlike vitamin C or B12.
